We thought Covid was the culprit but appears to be crud. I get this every year about this time. A Saturday morning visit to the clinic brought a few medicinal items home and I am feeling somewhat better today. The weather is warm but we are staying inside nonetheless. Time for some seed orders to go out.
wvhikerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01581259093210091348noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6953930781785213575.post-59983258186764795242022-12-24T03:28:00.000-08:002022-12-24T03:28:03.462-08:00Merry Christmas!
Well Christmas is upon us all. Amy and I have traveled back to WV for the holidays to see her parents and family and friends. We were up over Thanksgiving as well. It is about a 7 hour drive for us each way and with the weather being so cold this time, it was definitely harder as we brought the pups with us. We left the house at 46 degrees and hit 0 degrees 2 hours later at the top of Fancy Gap, VA. It never really warmed up from there. And to top it off the WOF mobile developed a running problem we diagnosed on the final leg, so that means repair work this morning. Some very close friends of ours have offered the use of their shop near their farm so thankful for that. I say that as it is 2 degrees this morning with a high of 16 forecasted today. Definitely better than yesterday but still cold for transplanted Tarheels.

I am starting to get the seed- ordering feeling this year as the catalogs have been steadily arriving at the farm. I have some work to do on the beds and then I am going to make a solid plan on what we will be planting this year. I also have thoughts on a greenhouse build as I am taking down a pool deck and will have some excess materials (after back deck repair.) I cruised by Our Happy Acres last week and noticed Dave had one and inquired how his was built. This is something I have wanted for a while so we'll see how it plays out in this spring's preparations. As far as the seeds, I definitely will be getting some heirloom tomatoes as we love a good tomato. Also will get our standard cucumber and green peppers. We'll see what happens. I do have some left over seeds from last year that I need to check for viability. I usually order from Territorial Seeds, Sow True Seed and Peaceful Valley.

And with that we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

wvhikerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01581259093210091348noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6953930781785213575.post-57431227771387551562022-11-27T16:05:00.000-08:002022-11-27T16:05:12.973-08:00Winding Down 2022
Hello and how are you doing? I hope everything has been well for everyone. There have been many changes here on the 'farm' so let's dive right in to that.

Our business slowed down this year, more than likely due to the economy, so I searched for a full time job. I was hired in July at the same company my youngest son works at but was laid off three weeks later, dur to 'going in a different direction.' It took me a while to get that one. So I went on a short golf trip and started applying again when I returned. I eventually was hired by The Town of Benson, NC as their project manager. I started at the end of October. It is a little different from what I have done in the past but I do like the work environment and people. I will say it is demoralizing getting so many rejection letters and emails. I know my age had a lot to do with that although companies will not admit that. I will also say that my commute is a lot shorter than my last one was a few years ago. 15 to 20 minutes to get to work now. I would love to have my wife find something closer too as I know her commute is hard on her.

Here we have Sir Benjamin Woffington the Third

And Lady Matilda Mae of Woflandia.

Otherwise known as Benjamin, B- dog, or Scooter and Tilly, Tilster or Brat Dog. They have been with us for a little while, Benjamin 3 years and Tilly 2 years. Benjamin is a mix of Saint Bernard, Boxer, and a few other things and Tilly is a Husky/ Malamute mix. She is definitely wild at times (especially when she was little) and Benjamin has taken up the role as farm WOF. He is definitely attached to my wife and Tilly hangs with me mostly. Always something with these two. And Princess Leia the cat is still going strong, sleeping everywhere and letting the dogs know she is in charge.

We still have our Etsy business running and we have reduced our booth presence to one location now.

We need to work on more than we do but now time is limited with me working full time now. We sell antiques and vintage items, both online and in the booth. We also sell repurposed and original furniture in the booth. With the holidays coming up I hope we do well. Check us out. Google WOFdog Farms Trading Company.

The garden this year was pretty much a bust except for some cucumbers. It all falls on me as I didn't put the effort into it. Next year it will definitely be different and I am expanding it. I don't think grocery items are going to drop too much so it is good to plan ahead. I am on the fence about chickens but Amy isn't. She is not too keen on them but I am still considering getting some. I think now is the time to place the order for them. I have downloaded some coop plans and will build one, hopefully to make it a little mobile.

The 'fix the garage door' item from last post was this. My oldest bought a trailer and lent it to me to move some furniture out of a storage building. One day I was going to hook up to it and take it up to where he works so he could have it back. I pulled out of the driveway to back up to it, saw my neighbor coming up the street, panicked, reversed too quickly and hit a bush on the side of the driveway. I then really panicked, pulled forward, then reversed even faster. I hit the trailer which hit a set of metal nesting tables, that hit the garage door hard, knocking it off of the tracks and putting a good dent in it. Took me the better part of 3 hours to get it fixed enough to operate correctly. What a way to start a day. It seems my to do list keeps growing.

That's about it for now. Back to watching Hallmark movie and list a fe more things on Etsy. See you soon.

wvhikerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01581259093210091348noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6953930781785213575.post-78425128935883831272022-02-03T05:47:00.002-08:002022-02-03T05:47:35.724-08:002022 Has Rolled Around
And here it is. Almost another year between posts. Almost. As stated last time things have changed here on the farm for us and a lot has happened between then and now A quick run down:

I started working full time on our 'side business'
We have picked up a new WOF and another companion for the WOF
Garden was decent last year but I plan on a good one this year
Cat still being another WOF around here.
Amy still works full time and has been doing well in that regard
We have expanded our original Etsy business to include a website and currently two antique booths.
I have been redoing furniture for some time now.
We look like we live in an episode of hoarders at times.

I have been pondering on what to do for the garden this year and I think we'll be trying some new varieties and more items that we can keep for the remainder of the year. A true year- round (almost) garden. I have also considered getting chickens this year too.

I have a ton of photos and detailed information to come but as of now I have to get some packages ready to ship and fix the garage door (more on that later too) so I can get furniture out to the booths. Until this weekend stay safe kids.
wvhikerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01581259093210091348noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6953930781785213575.post-2561566733900493312021-02-26T16:10:00.001-08:002021-02-26T16:10:06.598-08:00And....
You thought one post a year was long. Here is another one. Life has been busy for us but that is changing today. I left the corporate construction world to work on our business full time.

A quick note but I will have more this weekend.
wvhikerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01581259093210091348noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6953930781785213575.post-63521962340801880802020-04-07T16:51:00.000-07:002020-04-07T16:51:39.614-07:002020? Hello. Very long time between posts for sure. Seems like life, work, changes in general seem to catch up to us. But as a resolution for myself, I decided to revive this blog.

wvhikerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01581259093210091348noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6953930781785213575.post-7703421187064731292018-03-01T17:37:00.000-08:002018-03-01T17:46:46.772-08:00Ides of.............Well MarchHappy March to everyone. I know the Ides are on the 15th but I thought about getting a head start.
Here on the homefront a few things have taken place. I finally reached to big 50 yesterday. No big deal for me, just another day. But I guess a milestone nonetheless. Well Bailey and the cat have had their rounds and rounds. She hates the cat. Period. After some time of trying to get it worked out it never did. So sadly we called and gave her back up to the spca where I got her. Maybe again some day.
On the garden front I finally got some seeds started. One platt. Beyond planting cucumbers, green beans, everything else is in one platt. We decided to go small this year to give ourselves more time to do other things.
I spent last weekend mowing (yes, mowing in February) and tore apart some of the beds because they were rotting out a lot. I'll have to replace them with something but not sure what yet. Also found plenty of my buddies, the fire ants.

Overall shot. Bad garden.
Busy weekend coming up. A lot of work to do. On a side note we are in the process of setting up an Etsy shop so stay tuned for more information on that as well.wvhikerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01581259093210091348noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6953930781785213575.post-712428979000437142018-02-03T17:28:00.000-08:002018-02-03T17:28:01.083-08:00New Year of 2018Hello and welcome to my 2018 blog posts!
We've had an interesting few months so let me catch you up.
1. First and foremost we had to say goodbye to The WOF. She developed a rare type of skin cancer. We tried several treatments but weren't going to do anything too extreme due to her age. It eventually caught up with us so we made the call and stayed with her for the last moments. She was with us a long, long time and I have to admit it was one of the hardest things to do. But she's better off now.
2. Christmas: My sister, niece and her husband spent the holidays with us. We had a good time although interesting for the cat as two new dogs were traveling with them. They left on Christmas Day back for WV. December 26th I got the same virus I had the previous year. On the couch for three days before I was able to move again. I didn't wait this time and sought our treatment from the emergency room. A long wait later and I had a few meds but not anything over the top. I made it to work that Friday, the same day my boss made it back in from his illness. As of today I'm still on the mend with a bit of a cough and congestion. Trying a few new OTC meds now and they seem to be helping. Hopefully get through this soon.
3. First snow of 2018. I drove into it in South Carolina. I was coming up from Alabama at the time. Took me 12 hours total for a 9 hour drive. People in the south can't drive in snow.
4. New WOF. Much to Amy's hesitation I had to have another WOF in the house. Her name is Bailey. She's a 6 year old lab mix we rescued from the SPCA. She and the cat are having their rounds but I think they'll slowly work it out. I saw her on our local county animal control website early Thursday morning, called 3 times before I got through to someone. We went over her history and I told them my son would be around after lunch to check her out. He calls me and says that the dog was moved. We found her at the neighboring county SPCA so I spent Friday afternoon tracking her down and finally got her. She looks like she has part greyhound or whippet in her. She has seemed to taken over the WOF torch for the farm.

Well that's the Cliff notes version. As far as the garden this year I still have to repair/replace the garden beds and plan everything out for this year. Tomorrow I plan on testing some seeds I saved from last year. More on that Monday. Also have a list of things we need to get updated around the house. We've lived here since 2012 and haven't done any updating so now it's time.

Quick post so I'll see you soon.

Harvest Monday is hosted by Dave at Our Happy Acres.

We made the decision a few weeks ago that the garden in it's current size was too much to take care of with the two of us. Our commutes to work are long (ie. mines at least one hour each way), leaving us not very much time during the weekdays to do too much, which leaves our weekends filled with chores. After a while we got burnt out and said "enough is enough." We are downsizing other aspects of our lives since our youngest will hopefully heading out on his own adventure towards the end of this year, and the garden is downsizing with us. We've finally decided on 8-10 raised beds, which will be built in the same locations as the current ones, but out of block instead of wood. I'll be tearing out the current beds and have a bonfire this fall. I also plan on replacing the soil with new and tripling the landscape fabric and adding plastic, and maybe cardboard. The wiregrass we have here is crazy strong. Crap will grow on a rock. With our new size we'll be growing only the basics that we want and I'll have to keep a good eye on placement of crops to make sure I get the rotation correct.

Well with the downsizing in mind I mowed down everything in the field. No worries as the beetles had done some damage to most of the plants. I didn't lose any sleep over it. The remaining plants in the beds were under attack too so they weren't doing too well themselves. And the cucumbers had their run and were drying up. So I pulled all of the onions and left them out to dry and called it a year. Sad to say but we have other things that need our attention and gardening isn't one of them.

My harvest Sunday. Some small and medium Copra onions and two green bell peppers.
Since my last post my wife traded off her jeep on a Honda Civic which she likes alot, I was hit in the rear end of my truck turning into our office parking lot so I've been waiting to get it back, my annual golf trip is coming up this week and we lost a few guys (they didn't evacuate deciding to ride out the storm; they're alive just stupid) since they live in Clearwater and didn't leave, I managed to strain my back (again) at the gym last Monday so I've been taking it easy to make sure I can go on this trip, our son was medically denied for the Coast Guard so now he's focused on the Air Force, my in-laws celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, and we got Roku Saturday since we don't have network TV. That and with the west under fire and Hurricanes Harvey and Irma hitting the south, things are definitely interesting.

Due to the lack of rain recently things have been sorta slow in the garden. The tomatoes have finally starting coming in nicely and the onions are doing well to. Cucumbers seem to be finalizing their supply for this year but we have had a good harvest from them so no complaints really. There have been discussions between Amy and myself about the garden for next year and we have definitely decided that we are going to scale back to about 9 or so raised beds and be done with it. Our schedules leave us no real time to work on them throughout the week, leaving our weekends full of gardening and not much else. With our youngest off on his new adventures later this year it seems we need to slow down some, doing some of the other things we liked to do before. We also plan on doing some traveling next year to here and there. No place too exoctic, but just scoping out some areas where we would like to spend our remaining years. Climate is a big check on the list for us. We do have a few areas picked out but we need to spend more time researching and asking questions before we get too far into it. May be asking questions of the fellow harvesters here :). Anyway off to what's happening in the garden this week.

As I said before, tomatoes have really come in on their own. Amy's has been able to get a few of here favorite, Solar Flares. We also get a smattering of romas and grapes, a few Better Boys thrown in. I am excited that the new variety I tried this year have set nicely and I have a few to eat. They are called Red Pear (or Pomodoro.) They are obviously pear in shape and they do have a rich taste. Not so much acidic but I'd say close to a Mortgage Lifter. I got the from Seeds From Italy. They sell only heirloom varieties. Between that, the previously- mentioned Solar Flares, Better Boys, Romas, and Grapes, I've picked a few Mortgage Lifters and Boxcar Willies. A few of the plants are pretty much dead and a few are going strong. In looking around at other gardens in the area, everyone seems to be in the same boat. Earlier we got a lot of rain and the past week and a half, nothing.

Here's a picture of the harvest Amy picked Sunday.

A little bit of everything. I was hoping to get enough ripe tomatoes at once to make some salsa but they may not happen. If not we'll hit the farmers market for a box of Romas and make it then. Still save money in the end and the recipe we use tastes great. And low cal snack if you eat it right.

A few weeds here and there but I'm keeping it fairly trimmed back as I can.

Here's this week's (and last weeks, sorry) harvest totals.

I did start some more bush beans in the raised beds as we wanted to get some more quarts canned, but do to lack of rain they haven't done too much.

Onions. Yes not hard to grow these things.

Closing up I finished the last Viking book, read another book called Behind the Scenes by Elizabeth Keckly and now am on A Walk in the Wilderness, about the Appalachian Trail. Some day I plan on walking it. Amy may not know it yet...

WOF of the Week. Why not. Scrounge for snacks during meal prep.

It has been overwhelmingly hot here the last few weeks. So much so that the plants have been taking a beating. Tomatoes are so to ripen and some of the plants are not looking too good, peppers are doing so-so, but cucumbers are doing great. Go figure. I know I haven't been on here for a few weeks so I got a lot to catch up on.
Harvest Monday's are hosted by Dave at Our Happy Acres.

Well, this week has been somewhat of a slow one in the garden. My wife and I took a long weekend which has been nice but it seems I'm still not getting everything that I want to get done, done. As I sit here typing this on Sunday evening I am already planning tomorrow ans Tuesday, although I may go golfing or paintball Tuesday as well. Gotta half some fun, right?

As you can see it was slim picking this week. One thing I am kinda surprised about are the cucumbers. The past few years we haven't had good luck with them. Now it looks like pickle making tomorrow. Beyond that everything else is taking its time. Green beans are slowly dying off and I may get a few picked Monday but that's pretty much it for them. I did get the pole beans planted and they have come up. Reminding myself now to spread out the slug killer. I also have a few tomato plants that are struggling a bit, yellowing leaves at the base. One thing I have been particular about this year is weeding and fertilizing. Not sure what it is but I'm keeping my eye on it. I am trying a compost tea from the Blak Cow mix to see if it will help. Onward to other things.

Speaking of compost tea. Filled it with water and stir it once in a while. Pour it out Tuesday and a few plants.
It's what we call the place. :)

Been a fairly good week here on the farm and aroundabout town too. Amy and I went to the farmer's market Saturday morning to look at a few things and pick up a few things. Peaches and corn are the big items selling right now. We picked up some tomatoes, white sweet potatoes, beets, peaches, salsa, and bruschetta from our bruschetta guy. Yes, we have a guy. And it is good.
Sunday was food shopping, cooking, prepping, and gardening. I got the Roma tomatoes planted out and planted 6 habanero pepper plants a neighbor gave us. Same neighbors that gave us a box of corn earlier in the week. Nice to know farmers. Amy picked green beans and few more cukes. We've been getting a steady supply of cukes all week. I planted 2 rows of pole beans to show the critters I can do it.

Things are starting to pick up around WOFdog Farms here growth- wise. I did the first picking on the green beans, a few cucumbers, and pulled a couple of the garlic out. Tomatoes and peppers have a long way to go. And I am going to have to do some war on pests.

First lets start with the bad. Those green beans seedlings and sweet potato slips I planted a few weeks ago? Beans were devoured by slugs more than likely and either they or rabbits got to the sweet potatoes.

Thankfully they seem to have re- grown some leaves and may get through this but I'm not happy about the beans. I bought some slug/snail killer but am going to wait a few days since its supposed to rain tomorrow. Not sure if I'm going to replant the beans. Sorry about the weeds but I did clear out a lot Sunday.

The good. Green beans. I grow one type, kentucky bush, mainly for canning for meals the rest of the year. The slugs got up in one of the raised beds and took to some plants but not all. I found their entrance and hopefully cut them off.

The pictures are sideways and I couldn't fix them, sorry. These plants are prolific producers but are hard on the back. Pole beans for next year.
Harvest Monday is hosted by Dave at Our Happy Acres.

Harvest picked up a little bit but only by happenstance. I walked by the volunteer onion bed Sunday afternoon and notice a couple of the red onions seemed to be done so I pulled them. 7.5 ounces plus probably the last strawberry picking this year.

Spent Saturday afternoon weeding everything except the volunteer onion bed and another bed were aren't using for anything. Let me tell you that was a fun job! Especially that summer is in the south now. One good surprise is that my belated order of O'Henry sweet potatoes were delivered which meant that I needed to find a place in the garden for them. Onwards to Sunday. Spent the morning shopping and meal prepping and hit the garden again. I staked up some tomato plants and put a row of netting for the cucumbers, hoping that they'll climb their way up. Then I went about tilling up a patch of ground up from my compost pile several times, then planted out about 38 slips. I didn't get the netting up for them as they are climbers because by that point I was spent for the day. But as always happens I remembered that I needed to transplant my late Romas. Got that done too then planted some Alyssum and transplanted some of the rogue marigolds out of the walk paths into another container. Then I was finally done. Anyway I want to show off the weed- free beds as this is probably the last time they'll be like that :)

This is the location I picked for the sweet potatoes. I had already ran the tiller through this once and raked it out. I watered it good, tilled it again, raked it out. Then I ran my small tiller through it to get rid of the remaining wiregrass clumps. Hate the stuff.

And put them in this bucket. Amy and I were shopping a few years ago inside a grocery store and there was a couple of stacks of these, maybe 12 to a stack, that had a "free" sign on them. Of course we grabbed them. The knee pad with the sprinkler on it is where I planted the alyssum. We had rain coming in Sunday evening and I didn't want the seeds pelted.
No WOF of the Week. Just didn't really see anything that stood out. I write this out Sunday evening as Mondays are work days for me, so I set the schedule for Monday at around 6:00 am. I just have to remind myself to go to Dave's site and link up. Almost forgot to last week. Until next time.

A time to reflect on those that have made the sacrifice for our country. I am forever grateful.

Well harvest-wise we got a few more strawberries but they are starting to die down now. We'll cut any remaining flowers off, clean up the bed, and mulch them. I am still considering transplanting them. We'll see.

Amy and I did a lot of work in the garden and her flower beds Saturday. It was a long, hot day to be sure. I got the remaining tomato plants in the ground, weeded the upper field where they went in, threw up some cages that I had, watered everything in real good (still have to run drip line up there), transplanted some marigolds between the plants, planted 3 more rows of green beans, did a little weeding on a few of the beds, finished the mulch around her flower bed, and opened the pool up, which turns out survived winter really well. All it needed was sweeping, a few chemicals added and we were off and running.

Aforementioned pool. It was very clear when we took the cover off.
I changed my book on the main page as I finished it and also read another book named Hillbilly Elegy. It wasn't the longest but interesting if you know people from Appalachia. Family on my mother's side are similar to those hillbillies but not quite the same. Still half- crazy though. Worthy read if you have the time. I believe I am now going to read Vikings; Raiders, Traders and Masters of the Sea. I seem to be on a history kick and the Viking Age in particular interests me. I will cruise Barnes and Noble near my office for sale books, and yes, I buy books. I like turning pages instead of looking at a screen. :/

Slim pickings so far this year as strawberries have been our only harvest.

Been moving slowly this year getting things planted. Really slow. I usually have everything plated and ready by tax day, but between sickness, being worn out, and just blah its been hard to get anything done. I did get a lot of planting done this weekend as well as weeding all of the beds. I still have a few more tomatoes to put in the ground, start some eggplant, and run the water lines. I am planting all of the tomatoes in the upper field this year and am going to run the water line out of a bed that I am not using this year except for flowers. At the end of this year I plan on tearing out all of the beds and redoing them with block. The wood beds have finally worn out and are falling down. OK, enough about my problems. :)

Strawberries are even growing out of their bed. I have a plan of trying to transplant them into a long, skinny bed that I can net around.
Dave of Our Happy Acres hosts all Harvest Mondays.

No harvests again this week but hopefully soon.I just like to see what everyone else is doing in their gardens this week. It was a busy weekend for the homestead as all kinds of work was accomplished. Powerwashed the front porch and painted, mulched the front, sides, and rear flower beds, turned over the garden beds (most of them), and planted out some tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, and peppers.

Strawberries. Looks like we'll have a good harvest this year.
We picked up a used 6" Meade reflector telescope Saturday as my son has been hinting about one. I had an 8" before we moved to NC so I had an idea of what to look for. We took it to a small tree farm just down the road from the house and did a little start gazing. Here's a picture of Jupiter and its moons.
I never planned on growing anything over the winter and with our schedules I never saw the benefit of trying anything this spring. This doesn't mean that I've given up. I do have some spinach plants started that I hope to have in the ground next weekend along with some onion starts maybe. I say maybe as I've never had any luck starting onions from seed. In the mean time I have transplanted my Roma starts and as of last night transplanted the remaining tomatoes starts I have. Off the top of my head we are growing: Roma, Solar Flare, Better Boy, Mortgage Lifter, Box Car Willie, Rutgers, Grape, Rainbow, Katja, and Red Pear that I got from Seeds of Italy. Except for the Better Boy seeds, the remaining tomatoes are from my saved seed. Pretty happy about that. The Red Pear is a new try this year, based from Italian seeds. Interesting to see how they grow. I also bought some onion and flower seeds from them. Here's a link: Seeds of Italy.

Peppers are another story. I have great germination of bell peppers but nothing else. I meant to start more last night after the tomato work but was just too tired to get that done. Maybe tonight.

See what I mean. Two rows of peppers out of the whole tray, sans a Cayenne pepper plant. I watered them really good last night and will give them a few days to make an appearance then it begins again.

Still not too bad but it does kind of suck after you get 3-4 days of 80. So into March we go.
I haven't really had anything to post for Harvest Mondays so I don't link on Dave's blog as of yet. We are hoping for a good harvest this year so I am going to really concentrate on proper feeding and soil composition. I know this should always be done and I do it at times but with our schedules its hard to really get it done. I have already started a tray of roma tomatoes, peppers (which still haven't come up), onions and flowers. I hope to get everything else planted this weekend. Well, it has to be done this coming weekend or I'll never get anything in the ground this year. I like to do my main garden planting Easter weekend. It would be nice to try to get some stuff started in the evenings but when I get home from work, we eat and socialize for a time, clean kitchen, then I go change and hit the gym. By the time I get back from the gym it's bedtime. Thinking of going back to morning gym routine.
Well enough of me rambling.

Romas you say? Yes and for a while I didn't think these things would germinate but they did. This is 2 year old seeds I used. And I got my soil block maker out for a run.
Finally did some work in the garden yesterday, setting everything up for spring plantings. I weeded out all of the beds except for the strawberry bed and 2 others where the wiregrass has literally taken over so much that nothing will be able to grow in them. I have a lot of work replacing those two plus rebuilding the rest as they are all starting to fall apart. Add that to the stuff my wife wants done. Anyway after meal prepping in the morning and a short nap, here's what I did.

This is the elephant garlic that I thought was a dud purchase from Amazon.

Weeded out the volunteer onion bed. Speaking of onions, I did start some from seed but they aren't doing too well. I must be the only gardener that can't grow onions.

Overall view of a nice, sunny day. I'll be tilling up the ground right in front of me for tomatoes this year, giving the raised beds a year off from them and cucumber and peppers.

As I said above I have started the onions and that's it. I believe I'll start the spinach and peppers next weekend. Tomatoes, etc will have to wait until first week of March. And with the new planting season, my son's girlfriend bought herself a good- sized greenhouse that we helped put up last weekend. I finally have someone near me that gardens too.

On the exercise front everything is going good; haven't hurt myself in a while *crossing fingers, knocking on wood.* Still meal prep

Yes, that's my feet. As I said everything is going good but mid section being a little stubborn.

Ole TD here has been a busy bee since last post in November (yes November) so I wanted to catch you up on what's happening.
Seed catalogs: I have a lot of them, ranging from Baker Creek to Territorial Seed. I even have some from businesses I've never heard of. They may be good companies and I did peruse the catalogs but? I don't know. I am making my final seed list after this post though! Gotta get moving.
Garden planning: Yes, I probably should do this before the item above but as usual I will will come up with a basic plan and switch it up on planting day. And on a side note, the raised beds are starting to fall apart so there needs to be repairs or replacements happening this spring. They have built a few new houses in our neighborhood and I am eying the extra block left. Need to find out what they are going to do with it. I am definitely rebuilding with block no matter what. If I can't get it I'll keep my eye on CL or the Restore.
Facebook: I had an account on FB for some time and recently my wife and myself just decided to deactivate them. Tired of all the hassle and mess and idiots on it. I did start one for tossing dirt a while back and didn't do too much with it. I did a few updates on it this evening and plan on using it for my gardening, hiking, golf, etc. stuff. Check it out.
Chewy: We sadly lost our buddy on January 12th. We had previously decided that if the cancer came back we'd let him live out his life as best he could. It came back a lot faster and more aggressive than I had anticipated. I was out of town the day it happened so Amy had to deal with it by herself. He's not in pain anymore and we are happy about that. Our other dog and cat do miss him like all of us do.
Posts: Well with my Facebook dismissal I am aspiring to post more here. I'm not sure about the audience for bloggers anymore but hope to keep it strong.
Off to finalize my seed list!

Spent some time in the garden this afternoon. Used the air compressor to blow out all of the water lines to the beds, pulled the bell pepper and hot pepper plants, which now only leaves turnips in the ground. Still getting a few good ones here and there and surprisingly got four green peppers when I pulled the plants.

Looking pretty barren now. I don't plan on any new plantings until spring next year.

This bed was empty next to the onion bed so I tossed a few of the onions in it that were less than desirable. So they proceed to take off. Hope they turn out good next year.

My green pepper harvest. I believe I will save one of them to get seeds for next year. I don't have great success saving pepper seeds, averaging about a 25% germination rate.

Our male dog, Chewy, had surgery on his upper left leg this past week and I brought him home Thursday evening. The vet said that it was cancerous growth on his leg so we decided to go with the surgery hoping for the best. After it was over she said she wasn't able to get all of it as it intertwined with his muscle. We are sure it will be back. It has been a struggle with him the whole weekend. His gait is that of a bulldog so his twisting walk- motion hurts him when he tries to move around. His next appointment is tomorrow so we will see what the vet says. He was 6 years old when we adopted him and he's been with us for 4 years. He is a sweet, kind canine with no mean bones in him and it does bother us when he suffers. In hindsight we aren't sure our direction was the best. If it does re-appear I don't think we'll elect surgery, letting him live out his days pain- free.

Contrary to popular opinion yes I am still around. Seems like anything that can come does come up. Been busy on other projects which means the garden has suffered. In my last post a month ago I was hoping to get some cabbage in but that didn't happen. I visited the garden this past Friday (and once before on the 26th of June) since last post and things weren't as bad as I thought they would be. Turnips came in strong and the mystery disease on the bell peppers seems to have gone away on most of the plants. Actually got a decent harvest of bell peppers and some turnips that will be cooked this week. Probably freeze the peppers. Let's take a tour.
Updated figures. Pales in comparison to last year.
With the dire situation a lot of the bee population is currently facing, we need to do what we can to enlarge their habitat and garden responsibly. It is against the homeowner's covenants to have bees where we live but I may just do it anyway. I am considering mason bees as well as a hive or two of honey bees.

As I know everyone is aware, Hurricane Matthew headed up the east coast last weekend and made a turn into North Carolina, our current home state. It started at our house Saturday morning and didn't let up till Sunday afternoon. We live about 120 to 150 miles from the coast so the wind speeds weren't hurricane- force but they were strong enough to topple a lot of trees. We did have a lot, I mean a lot of rain. It washed out a lot of the roads near us and people lost power for 2-5 days. Surprisingly we lost power for only about 5 hours Saturday. Usually we are the first to lose and the last to regain. People east of us towards the coast were dealing with flooding all week last week and are now cleaning up. Not a real fun time for all.

That's it for me for now. Happy Gardening.
